TEMPE, Ariz. – After playing a rugged first half of the season, the Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis moved up to No. 2 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Tennis Rankings.
The Sharks, 10-2 on the season, is ranked second behind top-ranked Barry (Fla.) in the first computerized rankings of the season. Barry has a ranking of 88.25, ahead of HPU's 74.02 and the 73.46 of Columbus State in third.
Saint Leo (Fla.) is fourth at 59.47, Wingate (N.C.) fifth at 58.90, Flagler (Fla.) sixth at 54.83, North Georgia seventh at 52.98, Lander (S.C.) eighth with 52.22, West Florida ninth at 51.87 and Cameron (Okla.) 10th at 50.18.
In the PacWest, Hawai'i Hilo is ranked 20th at 39.59 and Azusa Pacific 21st at 37.90.
In singles, junior Valentin Masse of Saint-Gaudens, France/BTS CNED moved up to 12th nationally with a computer rating of 25.18. He had been ranked 31st. Sophomore Maxime Gayte of Annecy, France/Baudelaire joined the national rankings at 21st, with a rating of 18.09.
Masse and Gayte, the Sharks No. 1 doubles squad, jumped up to ninth in the nation, with a rating of 36.23.
The Sharks are idle until Saturday, April 6, at Noon, when they host No. 20 UH Hilo for Senior Day at Ala Moana Park.
