INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Hawai'i Pacific University remained 10th in the West Region in the third NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Regional Rankings announced today by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee.
The Sharks (20-8, 18-4), who tied for second place in the PacWest Conference, had a 20-8 record against Division II teams and an 19-8 against teams within the West Region after regular season play.
UC San Diego (26-0 DII, 26-0 West Region) remained the top ranking in the region, but Alaska Anchorage (27-1, 26-1) moved into second, swapping spots with Northwest Nazarene (25-2, 25-2) in third. The next two spots are unchanged with Azusa Pacific (24-4, 24-3) fourth, and Cal Poly Pomona (23-4, 22-4) fifth.
Humboldt State (19-6, 19-6) is sixth, exchanging positions with Simon Fraser (17-10, 16-9) who lost two games this past week but just fell to seventh. The final three spots remained the same with Dominican (Calif.) (21-5, 21-5) eighth, Cal State San Marcos (17-9, 17-9) ninth and HPU 10th.
The NCAA Division II Regional Rankings are used to select and seed the eight-team NCAA Division II West Regional. The PacWest Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association all have automatic berths to the tournament for their conference tournament champions. The other five berths to the NCAAs are selected at large via the regional rankings. This is the final regional ranking until the NCAA Division II Tournament bracket is revealed on Sunday at 4 p.m. HST (10 p.m. EDT) via NCAA.com.
The Sharks are the No. 3 seed in the PacWest Conference Tournament and open women's bracket play in a quarterfinal against Concordia Irvine on Thursday at 3 p.m. HST (5 p.m. PST) at Dominican's Conlan Center in San Rafael, Calif.
