Newcomer of the Year Masse Leads Six Sharks on All-PacWest Team

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Led by sophomore Valentin Masse, Hawai'i Pacific University placed six student-athletes on the 2019 All-PacWest Conference Men's Tennis Team announced Wednesday evening at the PacWest Tournament Banquet.
 
The No. 3 Sharks are the top seed in the PacWest Conference Tournament with a 12-4 overall record.
 
Masse, a 6-3 sophomore from Saint-Gaudens, France/BTS CNED, was named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year by the conference coaches and was selected First Team All-PacWest Conference in singles and doubles.
 
Joining Masse on the All-PacWest team are Sharks Maxime Gayte, Benjamin Loccisano, Cheng-Chieh Wang, Ondrej Ctverak and Lukas Bauer.
 
Gayte, a 6-2 sophomore from Annecy, France, was selected Second Team All-PacWest in singles and is Masse's partner at First Team Doubles.
 
Masse is ranked 25th this week the Oracle/ITA Division II Singles Rankings with a 6-5 at No. 1 singles in leading the third-ranked Sharks. Masse and Gayte are ranked 12th in doubles and with a 7-6 record. Gayte is ranked 33rd in singles by the ITA with a record of 11-2 playing No. 4 or No. 5 for HPU.
 
Loccisano, a 6-1 freshman from Duisburg, Germany, was chosen to the All-PacWest Third Team Singles. He is ranked 74th nationally in singles by the ITA with a record of 13-3 playing No. 3 or No. 4 for the Sharks.
 
Ctverak, a 6-0 freshman from Brno, Czech Republic, was named to the All-PacWest Third Team Singles. Playing the No. 2 position for HPU, Ctverak is 4-7 overall.
 
Wang, 5-10 freshman from Chiayi City, Taiwan/National Shan Hua, collected All-PacWest Third Team Singles and Second Team Doubles with Bauer, a 6-1 sophomore from Gottingen, Germany. Wang is 4-5 at mostly No. 3 singles, and sports a 10-3 doubles record with Bauer.
 
In addition to Masse with the PacWest Conference special awards, Azusa Pacific's Jakob Schnaitter was named the Player of the Year, and Hawai'i Hilo's Martin Soukal the Freshman of the Year. APU's Mark Bohren and Sonoma State's Jose Hilla were voted Co-Coaches of the Year.
 
The Sharks open men's play in the PacWest Conference Tournament on Thursday as they face eighth-seeded Holy Names in quarterfinal action at 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. MST) at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
