HPU Secures Top Seed In NCAA II Men's West Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific University is the top ranked team in the Men's NCAA Division II West Region and will host a regional match as the regional brackets for the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships were announced on Tuesday by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee.

The Sharks (15-4), the top seed in the West, host fourth seeded Sonoma State (9-6) in the West Region 1 championship match on Sunday, May 12. The match starts at 9 a.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club in Kailua. Admission to the match is free.

The winner of the match advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 21-24.

The Sharks have been idle since regaining the PacWest Conference Championship with a 4-2 victory over Hawai'i Hilo in Surprise, Ariz., on April 20.

The Sharks had an 11-year streak of tournament appearances snapped last season when they failed to qualify for the championship. It was just the fourth time since 1999 that the men failed to reach the tournament. HPU, who won the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Championship, have reached the semifinals five times.

Sonoma State is an affiliate member of the PacWest Conference in tennis and finished in fifth place at the 2019 PacWest Tournament after beating Point Loma 4-0 in Surprise on April 20.

The match will be the first this season between HPU and Sonoma State.

The West Region 2 championship match features second seed and 15th ranked Hawai'i Hilo (12-4) hosting third seeded and 21st ranked Azusa Pacific (23-3).
