Sharks Top Seed In NCAA II Women's West Region

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ninth ranked Hawai'i Pacific University is the top seed in the Women's NCAA Division II West Region and will host a regional match as the regional brackets for the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships were announced on Tuesday by the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Committee.

The Sharks (13-5), the top seed in the West, host fourth seed and 11th ranked Academy of Art (14-5) in the West Region 1 championship match on Tuesday, May 14. The match starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club in Kailua. Admission to the match is free.

The winner of the match advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships at the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 22-25.

The Sharks are coming off their second straight PacWest Conference Championship, but have not played since beating then ninth ranked Academy of Art 4-1 in the title match on April 20th.

It's the 21st consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the HPU women who have reached the semifinals in five of the last six seasons.

HPU has a pair of victories over ART U this season, both at neutral sites. The Sharks won 4-2 at LaJolla, Calif., on March 6 as well as taking the PacWest Championship match.

The West Region 2 championship match features second seed and 29th ranked UC San Diego (12-7) hosting third seeded and 23rd ranked Azusa Pacific (14-8).

The NCAA and the ITA computer rankings do not use the same criteria, thus the difference between the rankings.
