HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University started the new year up and down in the two major Division II women's basketball poll released Tuesday.
The now 12-1 Sharks moved up to 11th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Poll after being ranked 14th in the last poll of 2019. HPU dropped to 12th in the Division II Sports Information Directors' poll, down from 10th in the last ranking. The Sharks are on an eight-game win streak. Monday night's victory over Point Loma did not factor into the voting this week. It's the fourth consecutive time this season that HPU has been ranked in both polls.
The polls still have the same top two teams, but still differ in their positions. Defending national champion Lubbock Christian (Texas) (13-0) is the top team in the D2SIDA poll, while Drury (Mo.) (12-0) is number one by five points in the WBCA poll. Drury has 14 first place votes in the WBCA poll, with LCU having 9. In the D2SIDA Poll, Lubbock Christian has 14 of the 16 first place votes with Drury getting the other two. Both polls have Grand Valley State (Mich.) third.
Fellow PacWest Conference member Azusa Pacific (11-3) is 20th in the WBCA poll and is receiving votes in the D2SIDA poll.
The Sharks are in the midst of a six-game homestand. The fourth contest in the stretch is set for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. when HPU welcomes Notre Dame de Namur to The Shark Tank. The Sharks also host Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.
