Sharks Remain Third In National Polls

HONOLULU – PacWest Conference Champion Hawai'i Pacific University remained at No. 3 in both major Division II women's basketball polls that were released Tuesday.
 
The 29-1 Sharks (22-0 in the PacWest) are third in both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Poll, and the Division II Sports Information Directors' poll. On a 25-game winning streak, the Sharks are ranked in both polls for the 13th consecutive time this season. The HPU women won the PacWest Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season, becoming the first team – women's or men's – in PacWest Conference history to do so. It was the fourth PacWest Tournament women's title in school history.
 
This is the final poll of the season for the D2SIDA and the last poll for the WBCA until after the NCAA Championships.
 
The two polls are aligned in only in the top three positions heading into the championships. Drury (Mo.) (32-0) is the top team, receiving 15 of the 23 first place votes in the WBCA poll and all 16 first place votes in the D2SIDA poll. Ashland (Ohio) (31-0) is second, receiving the other eight first place votes in the WBCA poll, with the Sharks are third.
 
Alaska Anchroage (31-2) is fourth in the D2SIDA poll and tied for fourth with Lubbock Christian (28-3) in the WBCA poll. LCU is sixth in the D2SIDA poll with Grand Valley State (Mich.) (28-3) fifth in D2SIDA and sixth in the WBCA.
 
The WBCA has Walsh (Ohio) (28-2) seventh, Indiana (Pa.) (28-3) eighth, Texas A&M-Commerce (28-3) ninth and Benedict (S.C.) (27-3) 10th.
 
The D2SIDA has Adelphi (N.Y.) (27-3) seventh, Central Missouri (27-4) eighth, Indiana (Pa.) ninth and Walsh 10th.
 
Fellow PacWest Conference member Azusa Pacific (25-5, 18-4) is ranked 14th by the WBCA. APU is receiving votes in D2SIDA poll.
 
The West Region is strong with HPU, Alaska Anchorage, Azusa Pacific in the top 14 of the WBCA, with UC San Diego (25-5) ranked 21st this week and Cal State San Marcos (23-4) receiving votes.
 
The D2SIDA has HPU and UAA in the top four, with UCSD 19th, Cal State San Marcos 25th and APU receiving votes.
 
The Sharks are the top seed and will host the NCAA Division II Women's West Regional this weekend at The Shark Tank. HPU meets eighth seeded Cal Poly Pomona in the regional quarterfinals on Friday at 5 p.m. The other quarterfinal action on Friday has third seeded UCSD against sixth seed Northwest Nazarene at noon, with second seeded Alaska Anchorage facing seventh seeded Western Washington at 2:30 p.m., and fourth seeded Cal State San Marcos versus fifth seed APU at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals are Saturday with the UCSD-NNU winner meeting the winner of UAA-WWU at 5 p.m., and the HPU-CPP winner taking on the CSUSM-APU winner at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is Monday at 7 p.m.
