TEMPE, Ariz. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team used a strong schedule to finish fifth in the final Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Tennis Rankings administered by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The ITA also ranked three HPU student-athletes as top players in the West region.
The Sharks held a 9-6 record in the 2020 season and had placed third in the inaugural ITA Division II National Indoor Championships in Oklahoma City before the season was ended by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Columbus State (Ga.) overtook defending national champ Barry (Fla.) as the top team in the final rankings with Barry second. West Florida finished third, with Saint Leo fourth and HPU fifth. The rest of the top 10 had St. Edward's (Texas) sixth, with Flagler seventh, Drury eighth, Lander ninth, and Queens (N.Y.) 10th.
UC San Diego, the only West Region team not in the PacWest Conference, finished tied with the PacWest's Concordia Irvine for 12th and Hawai'i Hilo finished 19th.
The three Sharks ranked in the West Region are led by the HPU doubles duo of
Ondrej Ctverak and
Matej Panik who grabbed the top ranking in the region. Ctverak is a sophomore from Brno, Czech Republic and Panik is a freshman from Cheb, Czech Republic.
Benjamin Loccisano, a junior from Duisburg, Germany, ranked third in the region in singles, while Ctverak ranked seventh in singles.
