TEMPE, Ariz. – The Hawai'i Pacific University women's tennis team climbed to fourth in the final 2020 Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Tennis Rankings administered by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The ITA ranked four HPU student-athletes as top players in the West region.
The Sharks were 10-5 in the 2020 season and were the runners-up at the initial ITA Division II Indoor Championships in Edmond, Okla., when the season was abruptly ended by the COVID-19 pandemic. HPU's losses were to defending Division II national champion and No. 1 ranked Barry (twice), No. 2 Lynn and to NCAA Division III No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (twice).
The final national top 10 continued to have Barry (Fla.) and Lynn (Fla.) as one-two, as they have been throughout the shortened season. Nova Southeastern finished ranked third, with HPU fourth. Indianapolis, who HPU defeated at the ITA National Indoors, finished ranked fifth. Columbus State, who also lost to HPU, was ranked sixth, with West Florida seventh, Saint Leo eighth, Central Oklahoma ninth and North Georgia 10th.
In addition to the Sharks, the PacWest Conference is represented by Azusa Pacific at 11th,and Fresno Pacific at 19th.
The four Sharks that finished in the final West Region ranking are led by the doubles pair of
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara who were ranked No. 1 in the region. The duo were also ranked in singles along with
Elodie Busson.
Busson, a junior from Poille Sur Vegre, France, won a No. 2 singles ranking in the West. Tilgner, a junior from Seevetal, Germany, is ranked fourth in the region, with Miyahara, a junior from Tosu City, Japan, is eighth.
The NCAA cancelled all Spring 2020 because of the pandemic.
