AIEA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University, led by the strong play of Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit edged Hawai'i Hilo by a stroke to win the Hawai'i Triangular on Tuesday at Pearl Country Club.
The Sharks posted team rounds of 301 and 294 for a 595 total to beat the Vulcans who tallied 307-289—596. Chaminade was third after a 317-325—624.
Kamelamela-Dudoit, from Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, fired a 3-under-par 69 in the opening round on the par 72, 6,787 yard Pearl layout, then followed with a 1-over 73 in the second round to sport a 2-under 142. He was tied by UH Hilo's Keith Ng who shot an even-par 72, then followed with a 2-under 70 to match at 2-under 142.
Sharks sophomore
Keita Okada of Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy was third, four strokes back at 2-over 146 after rounds of 3-over 75 and 1-under 71. UHH's Dustin Franko was fourth at 6-over 150 with a 76-74.
The Sharks got a fifth place finish from senior
Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua who posted a 6-over 78, then a 1-over 73 for a 7-over 151. Freshman
Luke Shamblin of Matthews, N.C./Metrolina Christian added a 79-77—156 to the team score, while freshman
Grant Garrison of Lake Tapps, Wash./Sumner was the team's fifth player with an 85-82—167.
HPU also played five individuals, with senior
Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley finishing seventh with a 77-75—152, and freshman
Tomoro Shimabukuro of Okinawa, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy eighth at 76-77—153. Sophomore
Noah Daher of Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus Union chipped in a 78-82—160 to tie junior
Hasee Nazir of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran with a 79-81—160, and sophomore Nate Gani of Lanai City, Hawai'i/Lanai shot a 96-95—191.
The Sharks are off until Monday, Oct. 25, when they tee it up in the three-day Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island.
