Okada Charges In Second Round of Rose Intercollegiate, Sharks Stay Fourth

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore Keita Okada roared back on Tuesday, firing a 4-under-par 66 and help the Sharks remain fourth as a team after the second round of Hawai'i Hilo's Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course.
 
Okada, from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, bounced back from Monday's 2-over 72 to collect an eagle and four birdies with two bogeys on the par 70, 6,566-yard Beach course to sit in a tie for fourth at 2-under 138. His 66 is his best round at HPU and is one stroke off the HPU record of 65 set on Oct. 12, 2017 by Masato Yoshitsugu at Olomana Golf Club in Waimanalo against Chaminade.
 
 
 He's joined with senior Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley who blazed the course with his second 1-under 69 for his 138, five strokes off the lead and in a five-way tie.
 
Colorado Christian's Cam Sanland shot a 9-under 61 in the second round to jump into the lead at 7-under 133, a stroke ahead of Cal State San Bernadino's Brian Nielsen at 6-under 134 after a 2-under 68 on Tuesday. Western New Mexico's Joey Geary is third at 3-under 137 with an even-par 70 in round two.
 
As a team, HPU posted a 285 for the day and totals 9-over 569 in fourth, four strokes behind Western New Mexico in third at 565. Colorado Christian leads at 9-under 551, 10 strokes ahead of Cal State San Bernadino at 561.
 
The Sharks got a second great round out of freshman Luke Shamblin of Matthews, N.C./Metrolina Christian who carded a 1-over 71 to be in a 10th place tie at 1-over 141. Junior Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama suffered an 81 on Tuesday for a 154, while senior Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua added a 9-over 79 for a 156.
 
The Sharks two individual players, junior Hasee Nazir of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran and freshman Tomoro Shimabukuro of Okinawa, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy both posted 80. Nazier has a two-day total of 160, with Shimabukuro 161.
 
The final round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate is set for Wednesday, with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at the Waikoloa Beach Course.
