WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore
Keita Okada fired a 1-under-par 69 to finish tied for third individually and lead the Sharks to a fifth place finish at Hawai'i Hilo's Dennis Rose Intercollegiate that wrapped up Wednesday at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course.
Okada, from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, who had a front-nine birdie, overcame two bogeys to start the back side with a pair of birdies on the 15th and 16th to claim the 1-under 69 on the par 70, 6,566-yard Beach course. He finished the tournament at 3-under 207, tied with Simon Fraser's Bailey Bjornson for third, a stroke behind Cal State San Bernadino's Brian Nielsen in second at 4-under 206. Colorado Christian's Cam Sandland played even-par on Wednesday to win the individual title at 7-under 203.
As a team, HPU fell one spot to fifth after posting a 300 in the final round to finish at 869, eight strokes out of fourth behind Simon Fraser at 861. Colorado Christian won the team event at 1-under 839, 10 strokes in front of second place Western New Mexico at 849. Cal State San Bernadino was third at 857. Hawai 'I Hilo was sixth, five behind HPU at 874.
The Sharks had two other top 20 finishes. Senior
Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley turned in an 8-over 78 to finish tied for 13th at 6-over 216, while freshman
Luke Shamblin of Matthews, N.C./Metrolina Christian carded a 6-over 76 to finish with a 7-over 217 in a tie for 18th. Junior Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama shot a 7-over 77 to finish with a 231, and senior
Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua posted a 9-over 79 for a 235.
The Sharks also had two individual players, as freshman
Tomoro Shimabukuro of Okinawa, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy shot a 9-over 79 for a 240, and junior
Hasee Nazir of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran added an 87 to finish at 247.
The tournament completes the fall portion of the HPU season.
