Sharks Finish 14th and 18th in National Polls

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University women's basketball team finished the season ranked 14th and 18th in the final Division II women's basketball polls release on Saturday.

The Sharks ended the season 13-1, having their 38-game winning streak snapped by eventual region champion Azusa Pacific 72-58 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II West Regional on March 12.

The loss caused the Sharks to fall from fourth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll to 14th, still the top team in the West Region ahead of Azusa Pacific (12-5) at No. 16.

But in the Division II Sports Information Directors' poll, HPU fell from second nationally to 18th. The Sharks were ranked second in the region, behind Azusa Pacific at number seven.

National Champion Lubbock Christian (Texas) (23-0) was the unanimous selection for No. 1 in both polls, garnering all 23 first place ballots in the WBCA poll and all 16 first place nods in the D2SIDA poll. Drury (Mo.) (24-2) was second in both polls. Lander (S.C.) (20-2) and Central Missouri (23-5) took the next two spots – with Lander third in the WBCA poll and Central Missouri third in the D2SIDA poll. Charleston (W.Va.) (19-3) was fifth in both polls.

The WBCA went with North Georgia (18-2) sixth, Belmont Abbey (22-3) seventh, Daemen (N.Y.) (14-3) eighth, Nebraska-Kearney (23-4) ninth and Fort Hays State (22-4) 10th.

The D2SIDA listed Belmont Abbey sixth, Azusa Pacific seventh, Daemen eighth, North Georgia ninth and Nebraska-Kearney 10th.

HPU and APU were the only members of the PacWest Conference who were mentioned in the final poll.

HPU, the winners of the PacWest Hawai'i title in 2021 and three straight PacWest Conference championships before that, made their fifth straight NCAA appearance under head coach Reid Takatsuka who is the winningest active collegiate coach in Hawai'i with a 209-65 record (.763).
