Sharks and Okada Win Hawai'i Triangular

AIEA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University's freshman Keita Okada fired a 2-under-par 70 to win the individual title and lead HPU to a team victory on Sunday at the Hawai'i Triangular at Pearl Country Club. 
 
Okada, a freshman from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, birdied three of the four par 5s and two par 3s on the par 72, 6,787 yard PCC loop, but bogeyed three par 4s in carding the 2-under 70 to finish with a 3-under par 141. Okada won by six strokes over Shark junior Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley who shot a 2-over 74 for a 3-over 147. Hawai'i Hilo individual Ethan Hironaga posted a 3-over 75 for a 149 to finish third.
 
Okada and Torres led the Sharks to a team total of 9-over 297 for the final round for an 11-over 587 to win the team event. UH Hilo posted a 2-over 290 to move into second at 22-over 598. Chaminade was third with a 317 on Sunday and a 622 total.
 
HPU senior Tom Purcell of Liverpool, England/St. Mary's, playing as a medalist, finished fourth after a second 3-over 75 for a 6-over 150. Sophomore Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama added a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for fifth at 7-over 151.
 
Junior Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua carded a 6-over 78 for a 155. Sophomore Hasee Nazier of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran, who held the first round lead, struggled in the damp conditions on Sunday to post an 88 to finish at 158.
 
Playing as individuals, freshman Noah Daher of Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus Union added a second 79 for a 158, freshman Nate Gani of Lanai City, Hawai'i/Lanai put up and 80 for a 164, and freshman Ian Kinsman of Vancouver, Wash./Prairie tallied an 82 for a final of 172.
 
The best round of the tournament was turned in by UH Hilo's Willis Lee who fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday to tie for fifth at 7-over 151.
 
All three schools are off until they compete in the PacWest Conference Championships on the Big Island April 19-21 at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course.
