TEMPE, Ariz. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team moved up a spot to 12th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Tennis Rankings administered by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Sharks (5-4) were bolstered by wins over Metro State Denver and No. 14 Concordia Irvine in the PacWest Conference Tournament before the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament began today.
Columbus State (Ga.) (19-0) remained the unanimous number one team receiving all nine first place votes, with Barry (Fla.) (8-0) staying second. Valdosta State (Ga.) (15-1) moved up to third, as Saint Leo (Fla.) (8-2) fell to fourth with Lander (S.C.) (14-2) moving up to fifth.
Hawai'i Hilo (8-2), the PacWest Conference Champion, moved up to sixth, with West Florida (16-5) seventh, Azusa Pacific (17-4) eighth, Delta State (Miss.) (15-4) ninth and North Georgia (10-4) 10th.
The PacWest is well represented with UH Hilo sixth, APU seventh, HPU 12th, and Concordia Irvine (9-8) 14th.
Individual rankings were also released, with HPU represented on the singles rankings by freshman
Felix Einig of Mayen, Germany who is ranked 36th nationally.
HPU is in Surprise, Ariz., for the 2021 NCAA Division II West Regional at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. The third-seeded Sharks meet second-seeded and No. 8 Azusa Pacific today at 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. MST) in semifinal play. Top-seeded and No. 6 UH Hilo takes on fourth-seeded and No. 14 CUI in the other semifinal. The winners meet Saturday, also at 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. MST) for to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships in Surprise, May 18-20.
