TEMPE, Ariz. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team moved up one spot to finish the season ranked 11th in the final 2021 Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Tennis Rankings administered by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Sharks of Coach Henrik Bode completed the pandemic shortened 2021 season with a 6-5 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II West Regional Final after placing third at the PacWest Conference Championships.
The Sharks also had three student-athletes ranked nationally in singles or doubles play. Freshman
Felix Einig of Mayen, Germany, was ranked 39th in singles, while senior
Benjamin Loccisano of Duisburg, Germany and sophomore
Marcel Hornung of Aachen, Germany ranked 16th in doubles.
HPU finished the season ranked second in the West Region behind fourth ranked Hawai'i Hilo. In the region, Einig ranked sixth, with Loccissano 11th and freshman
Kilian Maitre of France 12th in singles. Loccisano and Hornung are third in doubles, with junior
Cheng-Chieh Wang of Chiayi City, Taiwan and Einig ranked seventh in the region.
National champion Barry (Fla.) (13-0) finished the season at No. 1, with Columbus State (Ga.) (23-1), who lost to the Buccaneers in the national championship match, second. Saint Leo (Fla.) (9-3) was third, with UH Hilo (11-3) fourth and Valdosta State (Ga.) (15-2) fifth. West Florida (15-3) finished sixth, Lander (S.C.) (13-3) and Indianapolis (19-4) tied for seventh, with North Georgia (12-5) ninth and Delta State (Miss.) (15-5) 10th. HPU was next at 11th.
In addition to UH Hilo and HPU, the PacWest is represented by Azusa Pacific (17-5) 12th, and Concordia-Irvine (9-9) 15th. Point Loma (6-9) was ranked 50th.
