Women's Tennis Moves to No.2, While Men Drop to No. 23 in Rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released their updated rankings today with the Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team moving up to No. 2 in the country and the men's team suffering a hit and dropping down to No. 23.

The men's team struggled at the indoor championships and were handed a 4-3 loss by Point Loma on March 7th, but bounced back on March 8th with a 4-3 win over Concordia.

Jakub Beran was HPU's highest-ranked individual at No. 33. Beran is 4-1 in his singles matches this season and helped his doubles team to a record of 4-1 too.

The women's team saw improvement and moved up two spots in the rankings to No. 2 in the country.

Although the women's team finished fourth in Kearny, Neb. they fell in a battle with No. 1 Barry University where Shaline Pipa upset No. 1 ranked Deniz Khazan in her singles match. Pipa in the first set of singles rankings earned the No. 11 rank with an 8-2 record on the season. Coming in right behind her is teammate Marleen Tilgner at No. 12. Tilgner has also won eight matches this season for the Sharks. Leading the shiver is Elodie Busson who has been nearly perfect with a 10-1 record suffering her only loss to D1 San Jose State.

HPU's doubles teams have been nothing short of dominant this year with two pairs cracking the top-6. Pipa and Tilgner have compiled a 9-1 record including wins over No. 1 Barry, No. 7 UIndy, and multiple other top-ranked teams. Coming in at No. 6 in the first doubles ranking are the perfect duo of Abigail Wild and Elodie Busson who are 10-0.

Rankings will be weekly through the rest of the season with next being on March 8th.
