IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest conference named Hawaii Pacific University Softball the team of the week on Monday afternoon after a 2-0 weekend against Chaminade helped bolster them into a better position to make the PacWest tournament.
After a long two-week 17-game road trip, HPU will finish the season in Hawaii against UH Hilo and Chaminade. The Sharks came into the weekend in fourth place and one game in front of the Silverswords.
In a tightly contested first game it took every at-bat for HPU, as Noel Saunders came in clutch with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh and propelled HPU to a 4-3 victory. Hawaii used that momentum in game two jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, but Chaminade put up three in the second. An explosive five-run fourth inning set up
Taylor Thompson to blank CUH the rest of the way for a 7-3 sweep on Saturday.
