Sharks Golf Completes Round One of PacWest Championships

LITCHFIELD, Ariz. – The Hawaii Pacific men's and women's golf teams began competition at the PacWest Championships on Monday at the Wigwam Golf Club.

For the men, HPU is attempting to defend their title they won at this same golf club in the year prior, but Hawaii Hilo jumped out to a big round one lead over the Sharks and the rest of the field.

Freshman Shion Suzuki paced the field of Sharks athletes with a first round 3-over-par that has him tied for 11th after day one. Suzuki carded three birdies and six bogeys in the first round.

Sophomore Grant Garrison set the pace of play in the first group out and carded a 5-over-par round. His one birdie was offset by four bogeys and a double, but has him tied 16th.  Senior Keli'i Dudoit finished Monday at 7-over-par with two birdies and nine bogeys. While freshman Miles Atkinson was one stroke behind him at 8-over-par. Atkinson was the only Shark to begin his round with a birdie on the par-five first, but a triple and double on the back nine elevated him up to tied 24th at the end of round one. Lastly for Hawaii was senior Hasee Nazir at 14-over-par and in sole possession of 29th.

As for the women they sit in 5th place after first round scores. Sophomore Kellie Yamane had a stellar round and shot a 73, 1-over-par to claim solo second on day one. She went out in 36 with two birdies and two bogeys, on the back she had no birdies until two straight on 17 and 18 to end her round.

Point Loma holds a narrow lead over the field with only eight strokes separating the top five teams. PLNU also holds the individual lead headed to the second round by one stroke.

Sophomore Lily Landt copied her teammate and ended her 6-over-par round with a birdie on 18, her second of the round. Landt holds a piece of 10th place and looks to improve on day two. Freshman Shuiyun He and sophomore Clarrisa Burhan both carded 11-over-par rounds, each had a one birdie, and a pair of doubles as they sit tied 22nd. Rounding out the group was freshman Kameron Kwong who shot a 15-over-par with seven pars on her round.
