AZUSA, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University Women's Basketball delivered a competitive performance Monday night, falling 76–67 to Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center.
The Sharks battled the PacWest leaders throughout the contest, with the game featuring seven ties and six lead changes. HPU shot an efficient 42.1 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from three-point range, keeping pressure on the Cougars from start to finish.
Kyra Tanabe turned in a standout performance, pouring in a game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Lucia Ricci added 14 points with three three-pointers, while Jalen Samuel contributed 13 points and knocked down three shots from long range.
HPU opened the game shooting 58.3 percent in the first quarter and carried that rhythm into the second, keeping the score tight at halftime. The Sharks continued to trade baskets in the third quarter, matching Azusa Pacific's 18 points in the frame to remain within striking distance.
The contest was decided late, as Azusa Pacific capitalized at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Despite the final margin, HPU forced 22 turnovers and converted them into 25 points, showcasing active defensive pressure and transition opportunities. The Sharks also received 21 points off the bench, highlighting balanced contributions across the rotation.
With the road stretch complete, Hawai'i Pacific will look to carry the momentum from its competitive showing into the next phase of PacWest play.
