Honolulu, HI (October 14, 2011) – Most seats were full at St. Andrew's Priory on Friday night, although fans only needed the edge of them. Hawai'i Pacific outlasted UH-Hilo to win in five sets (25-21, 24-26, 17-25, 25-17, 22-20).
HPU took early control in the first set with an 11-5 lead; the Vulcans would draw to within two, but no closer as HPU won the first set 25-21. HPU fell behind in the second set 10-6, but rallied late to tie the set at 24. However, an attack error and a kill by Hilo's Hillary Hurley ended it. HPU also fell behind in the third set, 11-4, and never recovered. HPU started hot in the fourth set taking an 8-3 lead on a dump by Pihana Kea. HPU kept a comfortable margin and won 25-17 on a
Natasha Bell kill. The fifth set began tied at 3, but HPU scored five consecutive points to gain control. Hilo came back and tied the match at 13, from that point the scored would be tied seven more times. With the score tied at 20, the Sea Warriors got kills from
Courtney Curran and Bell to win the match.
Sanoe Recca led HPU with 18 kills; Bell had 13, Curran 12 and
Brittney Wood 11. Kea had 37 assists to go with 22 digs.
Kyra Pelayo registered 31 digs while
Chelsey Buyuan had 15 and Recca had 14.
Haley Doerfler had four block solos to lead HPU on defense.
HPU is now 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest.
UHH is 11-4, 7-3. Hurley had a game-high 31 kills on 90 attempts.
HPU next goes on the road to Riverside, CA to play Cal Baptist on Thursday at 7 PM PST.
