Volleyball Starts Hot, but Falters

Honolulu, HI (September 3, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific answered the alarm and won the first set in a rare A.M. match, however the 13th ranked Seattle Pacific won the next three sets for the victory (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24).

HPU started hot, hitting .297 in the first set. HPU lead 18-10 and was able to seal the match. The second set was close, with the match tied at 16; Seattle Pacific went on a 5-1 run to gain the advantage. HPU led only once in the third set and looked to be out of it trailing 20-14, but made a valiant comeback. A Brittney Wood kill made it 23-24 before SPU closed. The fourth set was also close throughout, HPU led 23-21, but the lead slipped away.

Natasha Bell and Sanoe Recca each registered double-doubles, Recca had 12 kills and Bell had 10, each had 14 digs. Brittney Wood had 11 kills while hitting .304 and adding 3 blocks. Kyra Pelayo had 38 digs as Pihana Kea had 33 assists. In her second career start, Christina Furrer had a team-high four blocks.

HPU drops to 1-4 on the year, although they have played one of the nation's toughest early season schedules. Of HPU's four loses, two have come against ranked teams and all four were NCAA playoff participants in 2010.

Seattle Pacific improves to 2-1; the Falcons were led by Nikki Lowell's game-high 13 kills.

HPU plays again tonight at 7 P.M. against Northwest Nazarene at St. Andrew's Priory.
