Monmouth, OR (November 11, 2012) – The Phoenix Inn DII Shootout ended yesterday, but the Hawai'i Pacific (2-1) women's basketball team stuck around for a chance at redemption against Western Oregon (1-2) whom it lost to on Friday night. This time the Sea Warriors prevailed, beating the Wolves 65-61.
For the third straight game the Sea Warriors would find themselves dealing with a first half deficit, as the Wolves came out hot, shooting over 40 percent and taking a four-point lead to the break.
Looking for a spark the Sea Warriors turned to their bench and
Mikela Thoemmes answered the call, scoring 20 of her 24 points in the second half. HPU would open the half on a 21-9 run over the first 11 minutes to grab its biggest lead of the game at 48-40. The Wolves chipped away at the Sea Warrior lead, narrowing the score to two with 1:30 left on the clock. HPU would clinch the game with 18 seconds left however, when
Susannah Walmsley found Thoemmes in the paint giving HPU the decisive bucket and a four-point win.
Thoemmes also grabbed eight boards and had four assists in the winning effort.
Ieva Nagy had another solid effort scoring 17 points, including three three-pointers. Walmsley had her second consecutive double figure scoring night with 10 points.
This game caps a successful trip to the mainland for HPU, going 2-1. The Sea Warriors return to the court on November 21st in the Oahu Classic at Le Jardin Academy; tip-off is scheduled for 4 PM.
