Honolulu, HI (November 21, 2012)-
Susannah Walmsley scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Hawai'i Pacific (3-1) women's basketball team opened up the Oahu Classic with a victory. The Sea Warriors defeated Adams State (2-1) by the score of 59-40.
The Sea Warriors combined a hot shooting start with tough defense jumping out to a big first half lead. HPU finished the half shooting 41% (13-32) from the field including 4-12 (33%) from three-point range. On the other side the Sea Warriors would hold the Grizzlies to 6-22 (27%) from the field on their way to a 33-17 lead at the break.
Things would get interesting in the second half as ASU went on a 14-2 run to cut the HPU lead to eight with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Walmsley would quickly answer with back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead back to 14 and the Grizzlies would never threaten again.
Mikela Thoemmes and
Brittany Hale each added four assists for the Sea Warriors in the winning effort.
Since dropping the first game of the season, the Sea Warriors have now won three games in a row and 10 of their last 11 dating back to last season. Next up for HPU is Augustana College (SD) in game two of the Oahu Classic on November 23rd at McKinley High School; game time is scheduled for 12 PM.
