Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Nationally Ranked Opponent

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 26, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (13-8, 7-6) fell to 23rd ranked Fresno Pacific University (11-8, 6-6) in five sets on Saturday night at St. Andrew's Priory (25-18, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13).

Despite coming off the roughest part of the season, the Sea Warriors gave Fresno Pacific all it could handle, and then some. However, FPU edged HPU by the slimmest of margins due in large part to FPU's Rupia Inck who posted 30 kills.

In the fifth set, HPU was in the driver's seat with a 13-12 lead. The Sunbirds, who only dressed eight players, did not go away and scored the next three points to win the match. HPU took a 2-0 lead to start the set, but it was back and forth from there. The decisive set was tied eight times and the lead changed hands three times.

The fourth set was a must-win for HPU to force a final frame. The set was tight throughout and was eventually tied at 16. Kasey Thompson then had three kills, and an error on FPU put HPU up 20-16. The Sunbirds retied the set at 21, but HPU scored four of the next six points to win. Pomai Recca punctuated the proceedings with a hard-hit kill to win the set.

Although technically FPU won the match in the fifth set, HPU's best chance may have been in the third. HPU led 16-11, but eight of the next nine points went to FPU. The Sea Warriors retied the set at 20 on a kill by Samantha Rummans but could not pull out the victory.

The first two sets were confusing as FPU handled HPU in the opening set, but then HPU thoroughly dominated the second set.

Recca led HPU with 14 kills, Rummans had 12, Thompson had 11, and Haley Doerfler had nine.

Rummans also had a monster match behind the service line with six aces.

Doerfler had a team-high .400 hitting percentage, Recca was just behind with a .324. The two also had five block assists each.

Amanda Moriarty, now playing libero, led HPU with 15 digs, Chelsey Buyuan contributed 11.

Marie Fujii passed out 23 assists while collecting 10 digs. Hannah Schuett added 20 assists.

HPU returns to action on Thursday as Holy Names visits St. Andrew's Priory at 7:00 PM.
