Box Score RIVERSIDE, CA (November 11, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (17-9, 11-7) toppled PacWest power California Baptist (17-10, 14-5) in four sets on Monday in Southern California (27-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19).
Samantha Rummans had a career-high 19 kills, which is also season-high for the team, in the win.
The first set was a classic that saw 15 ties and eight lead changes, the remaining three sets saw just two more lead changes for the match. Neither team could gain much separation as the biggest difference was three, held twice by the Sea Warriors. CBU had a chance to win the set when it led 25-24, but a hitting error tied the set. HPU took advantage with a kill from Rummans and another hitting error on the home team that ended the set.
HPU used the momentum from the emotional first set win to blast the Lancers in the second set. The set began as another close battle, but HPU made its move after already leading 15-13. HPU went on a 9-1 run to essentially end the set.
The Sea Warriors couldn't close out the match in the third set. CBU broke a 9-9 tie with an 11-2 run to gain control. HPU battled back, but fell just short after trimming the lead to one at 24-23. Â
HPU led wire-to-wire in the fourth set. The Sea Warriors took charge midway through the set, gradually extending the lead. Â The lead increased from 10-9 to 17-13 to 22-15. The always clutch
Kasey Thompson iced the match for the Sea Warriors with her 11th kill of the night. Â
"The girls rose to the occasion and executed what we have been practicing for the last week to a tee. I am very happy for the team," said HPU Head Coach
Daryl Kapis.
Elizabeth Culpepper and
Haley Doerfler were a dominant force at the net, both had seven blocks assists and eight and nine kills respectively. Doerfler continued her hot hitting of late with a .538 hitting percentage. Â
