Women’s Basketball Handles BYU-H, Unbeaten in Conference Play

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 14, 2013) – The Hawaii Pacific Women's Basketball Team (4-1, 3-0) completed the early-season Hawai'i sweep today with a 89-48 victory over BYU-Hawaii (0-7, 0-2) at Moanalua High School. HPU is now 3-0 in league play with earlier wins over Chaminade and UH Hilo.

The Sea Warriors came out with guns blazing in the opening half. HPU took the lead just 35 seconds into the game when Shianne Solomom laid it in, HPU did not look back, leading the game wire-to-wire. The lead grew to double-digits at the 11:44 mark when Ieva Nagy hit from long distance. With just 3:32 left in the opening half. Loren Gurrola also connected from deep to push the lead to 21. By the time the half expired, HPU held a comfortable 39-17 advantage.

Early in the second half the lead was increased to 30 on a Mikela Thoemmes bucket. With the outcome no longer in doubt HPU continued to get more separation from the Seasiders. With 47 seconds left to play HPU scored for the final time on Veanne Navarro's take to the basket. HPU led by 42, the largest lead of the season.

"That is exactly the kinda game I was hoping for with the road trip looming, it was great to get everyone minutes. We've improved over the last few ballgames and I hope we can continue that at Central Washington. Overall, I'm really proud of my girls and this complete team win," said Head Coach Reid Takatsuka.

HPU had a balanced attack on offense, with five player registering double-figure scoring nights. Nagy and Skye Savini led the way with 12 points apiece. Thoemmes added 11 points as Solomon and Morgan Comstock each had 10.

Laken McClelland just missed the double-digit club as she finished with eight points, but passed out a game-high nine assists.

All 12 Sea Warriors saw action, with everyone getting a minimum of five minutes played and no one playing more than 23.

As a team, HPU dominated the stat sheet. The Sea Warriors held a 32-22 rebound advantage and shot the ball much better (50.7% to 32.7% from the floor, 45% to 20% from three, and 85.7% to 40.9% from the line.

The HPU women will next travel to Ellensburg, WA to play Central Washington twice (December 16th and 17th).
