Baseball Splits Doubleheader

WAIPAHU, HI (February 15, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific baseball (5-3) bats rebounded with 24 runs in Friday's doubleheader after being limited to three runs in the series opener. Despite all the runs, HPU split the doubleheader, losing game one 13-12 in 10 innings and then winning 12-3 in the nightcap against Northwest Nazarene (5-2).

Game one was a heartbreaker, early on the Sea Warriors looked to be in control. Through the first three innings HPU starter Joshua Garcia retired all nine batters he faced and the HPU offense posted seven runs. In the fourth, NNU scored three times and then three more in the sixth. HPU did respond with one in the fourth, making the score 8-6 after six innings. The Crusaders would tie the game in the eighth, only to see HPU regain a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and the bases empty in the 9th, and HPU's closer on the mound, NNU tied the game and sent it to extra innings.

The extra frame looked a lot like the 9th inning for NNU. Again, with two outs and no runners on base the Crusader rallied for four runs. With all hope seemly lost, HPU battled back and loaded the bases. Two runs would score on wild pitches and Russell Doi would drive in a third to bring HPU to within one at 13-12. HPU had a runner in scoring position but a called third strike would end the game.

Edward Trovato was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in one and two-third innings. Every Sea Warrior arm gave up at least two runs with the exception of Doug Christie who worked one-third of an inning.
The offensive numbers were again gaudy, HPU had 16 hits. Doi led the way with four hits has Derek Nakasato and Chad Bolibol each had three. Kale Sumner also had a multi hit game. Doi, Bolibol and Jordan Oshiro all had two RBI each.

HPU buried NNU in game two with an early offensive onslaught. HPU scored 10 times in the first four innings to settle the issue. However, there were some tense moments. Starter Tre Haliburton-Goeas did a Houdini like escape job in multiple innings.  The redshirt freshman surrendered 15 base runners in six innings of work but only allowed three runs.

The HPU offense did not squander opportunities to score. Oshiro had a game-high three hits in game two as Marvin Campbell, Doi, Jordan Inamasu, Wade Tamaru, and Keanu Kapana each had two base knocks. Campbell and Inamasu each drove in three runs while Bolibol and Tamaru each had two RBI.

Reliever Jeremy Fujimoto worked a scoreless inning.

The teams will play again on Saturday at 2 PM at Hans L'Orange Park.
