Honolulu, HI (February 8, 2013)- The Pacific West Conference has released the 2013 All-PacWest Preseason Baseball Team as well as the 2013 Predicted Order of Finish. Shortstop
Wade Tamaru, catcher
Jordan Inamasu and pitcher
Michael Murray each landed on the All-PacWest squad, while the Sea Warriors were predicted to finish fifth in the conference by the PacWest coaches. Murray picked up Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors.
Murray burst on the scene in 2012 and his campaign was one for the history books, he set the single season record for wins with nine and innings pitched (94.2). Overall, he went 9-3 with a 2.38 ERA. He tossed five complete games and held the opposition to a .229 average. The transfer earned PacWest Pitcher of the Year honors as well as being named to the NCBWA All-Region Team.
Tamaru, a senior, made the First Team for the second consecutive time in 2012. Tamaru hit .361 with 25 runs, four doubles and 23 RBI.
Inamasu, also a senior, earned Second Team All-PacWest honors in 2012 after hitting .223 with 14 runs, a double, a triple, and five RBI.
Beyond the All-PacWest Team selections the Sea Warriors feature a strong mix of returners as well as some highly touted new players that are in the mix.
Sophomore
Derek Nakasato earned All-PacWest Second Team honors as a freshman in 2012 after leading the team in batting average (.363) and in runs with 36. The centerfielder added nine doubles, a home run, 25 walks, 19 RBI and a perfect fielding percentage in 125 chances.
Senior
Kale Sumner earned All-PacWest honors in each of his first three years at HPU, last year as a third baseman. Sumner hit .357 with 34 runs, 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 28 RBI, 35 walks, and eight steals in 2012. After seeing action at five different positions a year ago, Sumner looks to find a home in left field in 2013.
The backend of the bullpen begins with closer Ed Trovato. The 6'5” senior picked up eight saves with a 4-2 record in his team-high 19 appearances. Trovato struck out 45 batters in 46 innings while walking just 16. Former starter
John Albert strengthens the bullpen after pitching six complete games, with a record of 6-7 and an ERA of 4.72 in 2012.
The Sea Warriors also have high hopes for Division I transfer
Marvin Campbell who comes over from UNLV. Through five games this season, Campbell is hitting .545 with 13 runs, 14 RBI and two homeruns.
Yukumoto addressed his team's outlook for 2013, “This year we have a lot more depth, more than any other year. Our players have prepared themselves really well and we will see how we gel as one. Consistency will be a key factor for us.”
The Sea Warriors opened the season with regionally ranked Augustana College, taking four of five games from the Vikings. HPU averaged 15 runs per game in the series including a 22-1 rout on Sunday, earning Head Coach Garret Yukumoto his 206th victory passing Allen Sato for the most victories in HPU's history.
The Sea Warriors return to the diamond on Thursday, February 14th against Northwest Nazarene at Hans L'Orange Park; first pitch is at 6 PM.
