Baseball Wins Last Two on Trip

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 30, 2013) – The trip back to Hawai'i for the Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (20-14, 11-11) may seem a little shorter after sweeping today's doubleheader from Point Loma Nazarene (14-17, 11-9). The Sea Warriors wrapped up an eight-game road trip with 4-3 and 3-1 victories.

Starting pitching was the key on Saturday afternoon. Joshua “Rico” Garcia and Michael Murray didn't need any help from the bullpen. They each tossed complete games and combined to surrender four runs in 16 innings of work.

Things began a little rocky for Garcia in game one as he gave up a run, on three hits, in the first inning.

HPU would tie the game in the third inning when Tyler Tokunaga walked with two outs; he was chased in on a double by Marvin Campbell.

In the fourth, PLNU plated two more runs to grab a 3-1 lead, but that is all the scoring it would do for the game.

Tokunaga opened the sixth inning with another walk and he moved to third on a Sea Lion error. He scored when the next batter, Kale Sumner, singled up the middle.

In the seventh inning, HPU completed the comeback. With one out, a pair of walks and a single by Derek Nakasato loaded the bases. Tokunaga tied the game on a deep fly out to center field. Then Marvin Campbell delivered the clutch two-out game winning RBI.

Campbell and Sumner each had two hits; the rest of the Sea Warriors had two hits combined.

Garcia scatted 10 hits and two walks over nine innings while striking out five.

In game two, Michael Murray looked like the pitcher who was named the 2012 PacWest Pitcher of the Year.

The teams traded runs in the first inning. For HPU, it was again Tokunaga working the walk and then scoring, this time on a RBI double from Sumner.

Sumner also gave HPU the lead. In the third inning, he again doubled with two-out and scored on an error on the next play by the pitcher.

HPU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, although Murray wouldn't need it. Wade Tamaru led off with a single, but was erased when Jordan Oshiro reached on a fielder's choice. Failing to get the runner into scoring position with the bat, Oshiro did it with his legs by stealing second base. Oshiro moved to third on a groundout and scored on another big two-out hit. Tokunaga wrapped up a good day with the RBI double.

Murray was lights out, giving up one run in seven innings on five hits.

HPU returns home to host inter-island rival UH-Hilo. The schools will play a pair of doubleheaders on April 6th and 7th at Hans L'Orange Park.
