Waipahu, HI (March 8, 2013) – For the first time in program history, the Hawaii Pacific (12-4, 3-1) Baseball Team played host to PacWest newcomer, Holy Names (6-11, 5-5) splitting a doubleheader. Holy Names took game one 5-4, but the Sea Warriors rallied to win game two 4-1.
Game one saw a lack of offensive power for the first three and a half innings a
Derek Nakasato (2-4, 2 RBI) single to left followed by a
Chad Bolibol (0-2, RBI) sacrifice fly to center two batters later broke the scoreless tie.
A half inning later the Hawks would answer with three runs of their own. HPU starting pitcher
Rico Garcia (1-1) walked the leadoff batter and gave up a triple and a single to the next two batters score to give Holy Names a 3-1 lead, through five innings. The Hawks would again tally two more runs in the sixth to add comfort to their lead.
The Sea Warriors would not go down quietly. Back-to-back doubles by
Wade Tamaru and
Jordan Oshiro would spark a three run eighth for HPU, but it wouldn't be enough as the Sea Warriors would fell to the Hawks 5-4.
Game two showcased complete domination by Sea Warrior pitching. Starter Tre Haliburton-Goeas (2-0) went five innings, allowing just two hits and only one earned run, while sitting down four Hawks via strikeout. Relievers
Matthew Minnich and Ed Trovato would each make an appearance on the mound, combing for two innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit and striking out three Hawks, with crafty pitch placement.
Leading the way offensively for HPU, in game two, were two Sea Warriors whom did not receive the start in game one.
Tyler Tokunaga (1-4, 2 runs) and
Jace Poole (1-3) paced the Sea Warriors, while senior
Kale Sumner (0-2, run) contributed brilliantly with his glove all night.
