Softball Splits With Chaminade

WAIPIO, HI (April 11, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (23-16, 12-10) returned from an 11-game, mainland road trip, to face Chaminade (23-17 15-9) and earned a split against the Silverswords. The Sea Warriors took game one 14-1, but dropped game two 9-5.

The Sea Warriors dominated in game one, scoring early and often, while relying on a strong pitching performance from Melissa Kirby.

HPU scored a run in every inning, including five in the first.

The first three Sea Warrior batters of the game reached base and a Caira Pires two-RBI single quickly gave HPU the lead. Celina Garces and Melissa Awa each worked bases loaded walks for RBI's and a 'Swords error gave the Columbia Blue and Kelly Green a big lead early.

With HPUscoring four more runs in the second inning, one in each the third and fourth innings and three more in the seventh, the route was on.

Kirby finished without allwoing an earned run, while allowing just five hits, in four innings of work. Amanda Wisdom came on in relief to work a perfect fifth to close out the game. The victory is Kirby's seventh of the season.

In game two the Sea Warriors would score early and late, but a costly error in the middle innings, combined with a 'Sword three-run home run, proved too much to overcome for HPU.

Freshman Alysia Maddison got the call in game two for the Sea Warriors, but struggled to get out of the third inning. Only one of Maddison's four runs allowed was earned.

Leading 3-0 in third inning, HPU fell victim to an error that led to three unearned runs and a 4-3 deficit. Kirby came on in relief of Maddison, but the 'Swords managed four more runs in the fourth to push the deficit to 9-3. A Lauren Beard pinch-hit two-run home in the sixth closed the gap to 9-5, but HPU would get no closer.

Beard, Pires, Garces and Erin Fujita each had three RBI in the double header while Keila Elderts scored four runs.

The Sea Warriors will hit the road onceagain for a six-game road trip, beginning in San Francisco against Academy of Art on April 18th. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM PST.
