Baseball Splits With Urban Knights

WAIPAHU, HI (April 16, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (25-15, 14-12) rebounded for a 6-1 win in game two of Tuesday's PacWest doubleheader against Academy of Art (5-24, 6-32). HPU dropped the opener by a 4-2 score.

In game one, the Sea Warrior bats were stymied by Art U pitching. The Sea Warriors managed five hits and one earned run.

After the Urban Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, HPU tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Lanan Rice-Kashima led off the inning with a double and moved the third on a groundout. Tyler Tokunaga then dropped down a bunt single to score Rice-Kashima.

Art U struck for three runs in the top of the fifth inning to chase starter Rico Garcia from the game. He yielded four runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

HPU added a run in the ninth inning after Marvin Campbell singled and eventually scored on an error, but the rally would end there.

Ed Trovato was fabulous in relief, tossing four shutout innings while giving up two hits.

The Sea Warriors struck first in game two with a run in first inning. Derek Nakasato reached base on an error and then stole second, he scored on a single from Campbell.

HPU tacked on another run in the third inning to lead 2-0. Wade Tamaru singled to lead off the inning, the senior moved to second on a sacrifice by Nakasato. He scored on yet another Art U defensive miscue. At that point there had been four Art U errors in the last four innings.

HPU starter Nick Woodward was rolling, throwing a no-hitter through four innings. He ended up going six shutout innings giving up three hits.

The HPU bats broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning. Kale Sumner had the big blow with a two RBI double. Russell Doi also added a RBI single in the frame.
