Sumner, Inamasu, Poole Go Deep in Split

AZUSA, CA (April 23, 2013) – For the second straight night The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (29-17, 18-14)  split a double header with Azusa Pacific (13-28, 10-18). The Sea Warriors pulled off a late inning 9-3 comeback in game one, before APU returned the favor in game two dropping HPU 8-7 in 10 innings.

Senior Michael Murray got the start in game one and pitched a gem giving up just one run off six hits while striking out nine Cougar hitters. After 121 pitches Murray would exit the game after the seventh with the score tied at one.

APU rallied for two runs off HPU reliever Bryson Gauthe in the eight before Edward Trovato entered to record the final two outs of the inning. After eight innings the Cougars held a 3-1 lead, but the never-say-die Sea Warrior offense erupted in the ninth.

Jace Poole started the inning by pinch hitting for Derek Nakasato and was subsequently beaned by the Azusa pitcher. Senior catcher Jordan Inamasu followed with a two-run home run to left tying the game at three.  Wade Tamaru then ripped a base hit to left and scored on a Marvin Campbell triple that opened the floodgates. Kale Sumner and Chad Bolibol each recorded RBI base hits before Poole launched a two-run shot over the left field wall to make the score 9-3 HPU. Both Inamsu's and Poole's home runs were the first of their careers.

Trovato stayed in the game to pitch the ninth and picked up the win for the Sea Warriors after allowing just one hit in the ninth.
In game two the Sea Warriors jumped out to an early lead after back-to-back doubles by Sumner and Campbell in the first inning giving HPU a 1-0 lead. Azusa answered with a run in the third, two more in the fourth, and appeared to take control of the game before HPU answered with four runs in the sixth.

Down 3-1 Jordan Oshiro and Tyler Tokunaga managed base hits before Campbell worked a walk to load the bases. Sumner followed by blasting a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Sea Warriors a 5-3 lead.Down by two runs the Cougars worked single runs in the sixth and the seventh innings sending the game in to extras.

The game would remain scoreless until the tenth when HPU took a late lead in the top half of the inning.

Campbell led off the inning with a walk followed by a Sumner single up the middle. Codey Ellenwood would load the bases reaching on an error before Bolibol launched a two-run double to right center field to give HPU a 7-5 lead.

Azusa would answer in the bottom of the tenth however, scoring three runs in large part to a passed ball and two wild pitches. The game-winning hit came on a two-run double as the Cougars dropped the Sea Warriors 8-7.  

Sumner continued his red-hot road trip with six RBI while Bolibol knocked in four. Inamasu and Poole each registered multi-RBI games while Campbell finished 4-6 with three walks and four runs scored.

The Sea Warriors now head to Fresno, Ca to finish the regular season with a four-game set against Fresno Pacific on April 26th and the 27th. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM PST on Friday.
