Big First Half Propels Women’s Basketball Past Pens

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, CA (January 18, 2014)-- The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (10-4, 6-2) defeated Dominican (2-14, 2-8) 79-78 in the first game of its mainland road trip. Morganne Comstock picked up her fourth double-double over the last five games for the Sea Warriors who led wire-to-wire in the victory.

Despite travel difficulties getting to the mainland, the Sea Warriors looked good early.

Senior Skye Savini blocked DU's first shot of the game and Shianne Solomon scored eight points in the first two minutes of the game to give HPU a 12 point lead. The Penguins whittled the lead back to four at one point in the half, but a 10-4 HPU run to close the half gave the Sea Warriors a 12-point advantage at the break.

The HPU lead remained in double digits for the first seven minutes of the second half until the pesky Penguins made their move. HPU still enjoyed a seven-point advantage with 3:22 play, but an 8-2 DU run left the Penguins down by one, with the ball, and 13 seconds showing on the clock. The HPU defense clamped down on the final possession however, forcing a missed jumper at the buzzer and the Sea Warriors escaped with the road win.

Comstock continued her streak of solid games scoring 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds and a game-high six assists. Savini and Ieva Nagy led the Sea Warriors in scoring, each putting 17 points on the board. Solomon was the other Sea Warrior in double-figures with 15 points, 13 of them in the first half.

With game one of the road trip under their belt the Sea Warriors next face Notre Dame de Namur on Monday in Belmont, CA, Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PST.
