Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight, Sink Argos

Box Score BELMONT, CA (January 20, 2014)—The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (11-4, 7-2) defeated Notre Dame de Namur (3-13, 2-8) 72-59 on Monday evening.

The Sea Warriors jumped out to an early lead, eventually stretching that advantage to 11 points when Skye Savini found a cutting Veanne Navarro for a layup with 8:31 to play. After the initial outburst the HPU offense would bog down as the Argonauts closed the half on a 17-8 run. Still, the Sea Warriors held a 31-29 lead going to the break.

In the second half, the Sea Warriors quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead.

Savini nailed a three-pointer and Laken McClelland followed up with a layup on the next possession forcing the Argonauts to call timeout while trailing 56-46 with 10:08 to play.

The Argos briefly cut the lead to seven with 2:45 to play, but a Loren Gurrola layup and a pair of Morganne Comstock free throws sealed the game down the stretch for the Sea Warriors.

HPU was a remarkable 15-15 from the line in the game while also out-rebounding NDNU 45-32.

Savini had a huge night with a game-high 27 points, eights rebounds, six assists, five steals and three blocks. Comstock continued her double-double barrage with 12 points and 14 boards. With 35 minutes each, Savini and Comstock played all but five minutes of the game.

The road trip continues when the Sea Warriors head to Fresno to face Fresno Pacific on January 23rd. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m PST.
