Comstock Sets Rebounding Record(s), Savini Hits Late Game-Winner

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (January 8, 2014)— The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (8-4, 4-2) got back to its winning ways, defeating Point Loma (6-6, 4-4) 79-78. Junior center Morganne Comstock broke the HPU Women's Basketball single-game records for total rebounds in a game with 21 and offensive rebounds in a game with nine in the victory.

The game finished in a flurry, as HPU struggled to grab the lead over the final 3:40. Senior Skye Savini scored the Sea Warriors final 10 points of the game including a game-winning, fade away, jumper off the glass with seven seconds to play to give HPU the lead. Comstock grabbed her record setting 21st rebound with two seconds left to secure the victory.

The two sides went back and forth in the first half with neither side able to separate from the other on the scoreboard.

The Sea Warriors went on a 5-0 run to take a 32-27 lead with 4:48 to play in the first half after a Savini three-pointer followed by a Comstock layup. The Sea Lions closed the half on a 13-5 run however, and took a 40-37 lead to the break.

PLNU stretched its lead out to as much as seven in the early portion of the second half, but the HPU shooters began to heat up.

Brittany Hale, Loren Gurrola and Savini hit a back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to take a 58-54 lead with 11:12 to play in the second half. Comstock hit another bucket with 5:09 to take a five-point lead, but the Sea Warriors couldn't pull away.

PLNU built its lead to as big as three with 1:13 to play until Savini worked her magic to close the game and gave HPU the 79-78 victory.

HPU finished the game shooting 37.3% (28-75) from the floor including 34.5% (10-29) from long distance. The Sea Lions shot 44.1% (26-59) from the field including 36.8% (7-19) from beyond the arc.

Comstock had a monster night scoring 18 points to go along with her school-record 21 rebounds. The Seattle native also managed five steals and three assists on the night.

Savini registered 30 points on the night and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Sea Warriors out-rebounded the Sea Lions by a 52-38 margin, just missing the school record for rebounds in a game by seven, set against Chaminade in 2008.

Comstock commented on her team's strategy heading into the matchup, "Coach wanted me to get boards and that was my focus going into the game. I'm happy to break the record and even happier to get the win."

The Sea Warriors return to action Saturday at Moanalua High School when they face Chaminade. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
