Box Score HILO, HI (November 8, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (11-4-2, 8-3-1) finished the season with a 2-1 win against UH Hilo (7-5-6, 4-4-4) on Saturday afternoon on the Big Island.
The Sharks started well against the Vulcans. Just nine minutes into the game,
Ashlyn Ubongen fired a good shot on goal that was saved by the Hilo keeper.
Following, HPU gained control over the game and pushed hard for the lead.
Breanna Gaddis (16'),
Taylor Rae Silva (23') and Ubongen (25') all had good shots, challenging the Hilo defense.
Right before the end of the first period, the Sharks had more good chances with shots from Gaddis,
Erika Ellis and
Christina Imada, but were not able to solve the Hilo goalie.
The Sharks stuck early in the second period. It was Ellis, after a good assist from Silva, who made it 1-0 for the Sharks.
Following was a hard fight. HPU had several more good chances, but the Vulcans also managed to find their game and create chances.
With everything pointing towards a win for HPU, the Vulcans shocked the Sharks with a late goal in the 88th minute and forced the game into overtime.
Both teams started careful in overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, it was again Ellis who brought victory to the Sharks by putting the ball into the net after a good assist from Ubongen. It was Ellis' 12th goal of the season, putting her in second place on the PacWest scorerboard.
"I am extremely proud of the team for battling back and being resilient after giving up a late goal. It was a fitting end to the fantastic season we have had. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching this team and I am already looking forward to next season," said Head Coach
Gina Brewer, who picked up her career-best 11th win this season.
The Sharks also led the statistics in shots (14-5) and shots on goal (9-5).
Kelby Boswell finished the game with four saves. Ellis led the Sharks with four shots, Ubongen had three.
The season finale in Hilo was also the last collegiate soccer game for the senior Sharks
Ashlyn Ubongen,
Lexi Cameau,
Taylor Rae Silva and
Julia Borges.
The Sharks now go into winter break before they pick up practice again next spring.
