Box Score 2 AZUSA, CA (February 17, 2014)—After having its first two weeks of games rained out, the Hawai`i Pacific Softball Team (1-1, 1-1) was finally able to get its season underway on Monday, splitting a doubleheader against Azusa Pacific (10-3, 1-1). The Sea Warriors dropped game one 11-5, but rebounded in game two for a 4-3 victory.
The Sea Warriors lack of game action showed early as the Cougars put up nine runs in the first two innings. APU was aided by a trio of Sea Warrior errors in the second inning, leading to five unearned runs in the frame. After two innings the score stood at 9-1
The Sea Warriors responded with three runs in the fourth and another in the seventh but the gap was too large to overcome as they lost game one 11-5.
HPU kept its momentum from the strong finish in game one going in game two with
Keila Elderts smashing a triple to open the game. The 2013 all-region performer then used her speed to steal home giving HPU a one-run lead.
The Sea Warriors got on the board again on the fourth after a Cougar throwing error to take a 2-0 lead, but APU answered with a run in the bottom half to make it 2-1.
The score remained at 2-1 heading into the seventh inning with the Sea Warriors picking up what would prove to be a huge pair of insurance runs off a
Dorian Acierto single. The Cougars scored a pair of their own and had the tying run at second base in the bottom half, but HPU pitcher Chandrell Dacosin forced the groundout to get the 4-3 win.
Dacosin was exceptional in game two. The senior spread eight hits over seven innings while allowing just two earned runs for the win.
Acierto and
Sharae Esprecion each had two RBI for the Sea Warriors in the doubleheader while
Toni Baysa led the way with three runs scored.
The two teams will turn around and face each other again tomorrow in a doubleheader at Azusa.
