Women’s Basketball Locks up Third-Seed with Win at Hilo

Box Score HILO, HI (March 1, 2014) - The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (17-9, 13-7) finished off its regular season with a 78-61 victory over UH Hilo (9-15, 8-12) on Saturday night. The two teams will face off again in the first round of the Pacific West Tournament next week.

The game remained close in the first half as the Sea Warriors struggled to get separation on the scoreboard.

Skye Savini hit a three-pointer with 4:27 to play in the half to give the Sea Warriors a six-point lead, but the Vulcans fought their way to within one.  HPU closed the half strong however, going on a 5-0 run thanks to a jumper by Ieva Nagy and a three-pointer by Loren Gurrola to take a 35-29 lead to the break.

HPU carried the momentum into the second half, pushing its lead to double-digits after another Savini jumper and Nagy three-pointer in the opening minutes. The Vuclans cut the deficit to fewer than ten on three occasions, but would get no closer than seven, thanks in large part to 22 combined second half points from Savini and Morganne Comstock.

Comstock finished with a team-high 20 points while Savini added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Shianne Solomon (11), Nagy (10) and Veanne Navarro (10) each scored in double-figures for HPU.

The two teams will now head to San Diego where they will face off for the third time this season, this time in round one of the PacWest Tournament.  The Sea Warriors earned the three seed while the Vuclans get in as the sixth seed. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PST. The winner of the game will take on California Baptist on Friday.
