Women’s Basketball Earns the Right to Play Another Day

Box Score SAN DIEGO, CA (March 6, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (18-9) completed the day one HPU sweep at the Pacific West Conference Tournament  with a 79-62 win over UH Hilo (9-16).

The Sea Warriors came out a bit sluggish in the opening half, seeing UH Hilo jump out to a 10-1 lead three minutes into the game. HPU counterpunched with an 11-2 run that was capped by a put back by Danika Johnson to tie the game at 12 with 11:54 left to play in the opening half.

The Vulcans didn't go away however, regaining the lead until Laken McClelland drilled a three-pointer to put HPU up 20-19. The Columbia Blue and Kelly Green didn't trail for the rest of the half, leading by eight points twice, and heading to the locker room with a 34-28 advantage.
 
There wasn't much suspense in the second half as HPU scored the first 10 points of the half to take a commanding 44-28 lead. The lead was stretched out to 22 points by the under eight minute media time out at 62-40.

The Sea Warriors gained a huge advantage at the foul stripe, going 21-24 (87.5%) as Hilo only mustered eight attempts and converted half.

It was a total team effort for HPU with eight players logging at least eight minutes.

Morganne Comstock pulled off a rare feat, notching game-highs in points (23) rebounds (15) and assists (5). Loren Gurrola was a model of efficiency, scoring 12 points on 4-5 shooting including 2-3 from three-point range. PacWest First Team selection Skye Savini poured in 14 points, 10 coming in the second half.  

HPU ruled the islands in 2013-2014, going 7-0 against teams from the Aloha State. The Sea Warriors also extended their winning streak vs. UH Hilo to seven consecutive games.

The Sea Warriors will next face California Baptist tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in the PacWest semifinal.
