Women’s Basketball Stymied in PacWest Semis

Box Score SAN DIEGO, CA (March 7, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (18-10) fell in the Pacific West Conference Tournament semifinals to California Baptist (16-11) by a count of 78-62 on Friday afternoon on the campus of Point Loma.

The Sea Warriors were in control in the early stages of the first half, leading by as many as seven points. With 10:54 left in the opening half, Veanne Navarro got to the basket to give HPU a 23-16 lead. HPU continued to lead for most of the half thanks to hot shooting from beyond the arch (6-12). However, the Lancers took the lead for good with 3:47 remaining in the first half. By the intermission, CBU led 37-32.

HPU trimmed the deficit to one at 40-39 when PacWest First-Team selection Skye Savini hit a jumper two minutes into the half. However, that was as close as HPU got. The CBU lead mushroomed to double-figures and would stay there for nearly the final ten minutes of the ballgame.

Cal Baptist hurt HPU from distance converting 14-28 (43.8%) on three-pointers. The second-seeded Lancers also made twice as many foul shots as the Sea Warriors (14 to 7).

HPU had a proverbial block party, setting the team record for blocks in a game with 10. Morganne Comstock set the individual single-game record with six blocks in the game.

Comstock added 11 points and 14 rebounds, tallying another double-double. Navarro led the way in scoring with 15 points. Laken McClelland had a solid game with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The women's basketball team closes the season with at least 18 wins for the third consecutive year, making it one of the most successful programs at HPU.
