Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 22, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (3-1-1) lost the season's first road game against San Francisco State University (5-1) 2-1 on Monday.
The Gators found their game fast, coming out from the start and endangering HPU's defense. The Sharks gave up an early goal in the fourth minute of the game, a long shot from outside the box gave San Francisco State the lead in a physically hard game.
Although fighting hard, HPU struggled with San Francisco's play and did not find a way to overcome the opposing defense in the first half.
After the changeover, the Sharks managed to find the rhythm and to create more chances, resulting in two good shots from
Lei Kaina in the 54th minute. However, it was the Gators who scored the next goal with a short distance shot after a cross inside the box (54').
HPU's fighting spirit paid off in the 62nd minute when freshman
Sara Romo scored the first goal of her collegiate soccer career after a good cross from
Stefanie Catone.
In the following course the Sharks tried everything to tie the game, had some more good shots, but finally had to take the first loss of the season.
"It was a very physical game and they came at us fast from the start. We had a better second half and saw some good things from not only our starters but our players who came in as subs as well. This game was a good preparation for our conference games that start this week. We are excited and ready to win the next game," said Head Coach
Gina Brewer after the match.
The statistics presented a lead in shots for the Gators (13-11), but the lead in shots on goal went to the Sharks (5-2). Especially in the second half the Sharks were active, recording seven shots compared to just five shots from San Francisco State.
The Sharks stay in California and play their first conference game of the season against Academy of Art on Thursday, September 25th in San Francisco.
