Softball Takes Game Two in PacWest Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI (February 26, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (8-2, 1-1) took on the Seasiders from BYU-Hawai'i (4-6, 1-0) on Thursday afternoon to open PacWest action. BYU-H earned an extra inning win in game one (4-3) but HPU responded by winning game two 7-4.

Game one started out looking like a pitcher's dual as neither team was able to get anything going in the first two innings. However, in the third inning BYU-H was able to finally get to starter Kristen Caskey and put up three on the scoreboard and chasing Caskey from the game.

The Sharks retaliated in the bottom of the inning striking for three of their own runs to even up the score. After a few free passes to lead off the inning, Noelani Boyer struck a line drive in to the right center gap driving in two runners.

It was then all Alexa McCoin who once again looked much older than a freshman, she stepped up throwing 4.1 innings before allowing a run.  That lone run, coming in the eighth inning, would end up being the decisive blow and drop McCoin to 2-1 on the year after a stellar outing.

Game two seemed to be played by a completely different Sharks club as the bats exploded early.

In the second inning, Dorian Acierto drove in a run on a double to left center and later stole third. Carolann Toyama then drove her home on a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

The very next inning, the Sharks put the game out of reach with a five spot. Three of the runs coming off of a Sharae Esprecion line drive triple that the left fielder dove for and missed, which cleared the bases.

The seven run lead would be more than enough for game two starter Paige Crawford who continued to deal. She would not give up a run until the fifth inning, earning the win to push her record to 3-1 on the season.

The Sharks next take on Waseda University on March 6th at Howard A. Okita Field, with first pitch at 1:00 pm.
