Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (February 27, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (5-2, 2-0) made a statement by soundly beating sixth-ranked Fresno Pacific (9-4, 0-2) in both ends of Friday's doubleheader. HPU took the opener 10-2 while taking the nightcap by a similar 11-3 score.
The Shark bats were on fire all night and so too was the pitching. In game one, HPU ace
Rico Garcia yielded just one run over six innings while punching out 10 Sunbirds. The junior hurler allowed 11 base runners but made big pitch after big pitch to escape.
The HPU offense scored enough runs for Garcia in the opening frame.
Derek Nakasato started his big night with an RBI double to left field to drive in a pair of runs.
Chad Bolibol then singled the opposite way to plate Nakasato and give HPU a 3-0 lead.
HPU added a run in the third inning on an RBI from
Nolan Barraza, who also had a monster night. The Sharks made it 5-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Tokunaga.
FPU got on the board in the sixth inning with a run, but HPU matched in the bottom of the inning to keep the advantage at five. The Sunbirds got another run in the seventh, but it was their last of the game.
Barraza and
James Carraway then put the game on ice; each had two RBI hits in the home half of the seventh.
HPU had 12 hits in the game, three from Tokunaga and two each from
Jordan Oshiro, Barraza, and Bolibol. Oshiro, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, also swiped a base in game one (and added another in game two).
Ethan Kalin looked good in relief, throwing two shutout innings.
Game two, was very similar to game one with the Sharks again jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Barrazza added two more RBI in his first two at bats while
Steven Camberos and Nakasato each picked up early RBI to give HPU a big advantage after two innings.
FPU scored in the fourth, but another Nakasato RBI hit nullified the score in the bottom of the fourth. The Sharks went up 7-1 in the sixth after a defensive miscue by the visitors.
FPU scored twice in the eighth inning to close the deficit to a grand slam. However, HPU then scored four in the subsequent at bat to effectively end the game. Tokunaga and Nakasato each walked with the bases loaded, Barraza then singled home Oshio before
Codey Ellenwood ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
