Box Score 3 TURLOCK, CA (March 27, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (16-13, 7-9) opened the Turlock CVB Tournament of Champions. All of the games, played at a neutral site, could be key in the West Region playoff picture.
In game one, the Sharks took on Saint Martin's of the GNAC. The Sharks fell behind in the first inning when SMU homered to take a one run lead.
In the third,
Dorian Acierto hit a three-run dinger to left field to give HPU the lead. It was Acierto's sixth homerun of the season as she continues to tear the cover off of the ball of late.
In the fifth inning, SMU scratched another run across.
Keila Elderts helped HPU respond with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Mari Kajiwara.
Saint Martin's scored one more in the sixth, but HPU once again pushed the lead back out when
Carolann Toyama doubled down the right field line to score
Kristen Caskey to make it 5-3.
Caskey improved to 8-4 on the year after going seven innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out three.
In the second game of the day's tripleheader, the Sharks struck first against the UC San Diego of the CCAA.
Noelani Boyer doubled to left center in the first inning, scoring Acierto.
In the third inning,
Kiana Wolfe hit the first homerun of her career out to right field to push the lead to two. Later in the same inning, Elderts came around to score on a wild pitch. However, UCSD managed to score a run in the bottom of the inning making the score 3-1.
In the sixth, UCSD struck the killer blow with a three-run homerun to put it ahead for the win.
In game three of the tournament, the Sharks were tasked with a tough opponent in Cal State East Bay of the CCAA.
East Bay got on the board first scoring three runs in the first inning.
The Sharks answered right back in the top of the second inning when both Toyama and Wolfe singled to drive in two. East Bay retaliated in the bottom of the second inning, however, scoring two more runs to stretch the lead to 5-2.
In the fourth, two more runs expanded East Bay's lead as it continued to bunch together hits.
Chelsea Cramer drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Later in the inning, Caskey singled through the left side of the infield to score a run and bring the Sharks to within two.
The next frame saw East Bay push one more run across and earn the win.
The HPU will continue the Turlock CVB Tournament of Champions tomorrow (March 28th), starting with Humbolt State.
