Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (March 4, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (9-2, 6-0) swept Wednesday's soggy doubleheader from visiting Holy Names (10-8, 2-4) at Hans L'Orange Park. HPU just edged the Hawks in game one 4-3 and then won the nightcap more convincingly by a 9-5 score.
HPU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning in the opener. After leadoff man
Jordan Oshiro singled and made his way to third,
Nolan Barraza drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Including game two, Barraza now has 14 RBI in 11 games.
HNU tied the game on an RBI groundout in the third, but HPU retook the lead in its half of the frame. A single by
Derek Nakasato should have put runners on the corners, but a throwing error by the second baseman allowed
Reid Akau to scamper home.
The Hawks retied the game in the fifth on a single through the middle but again HPU answered. With runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth,
Chad Bolibol had the big two RBI hit to put HPU in front 4-2.
The visitors made it a one-run game in the seventh, but the Shark relief pitching shut it down from there.
Rico Garcia got the start and the win (3-0) after giving up two runs in six innings.
Jordan Deponte came on for the ninth inning and was perfect in earning his third save.
Game two looked bleak early for HPU fans as HNU struck for four runs in the top of the first inning.
Undeterred, HPU scored four of its own in the bottom of the first. Nakasato started the scoring with an RBI single,
James Carraway later walked with the bases loaded to plate Nakasato.
Steven Camberos brought HPU to within one run with a RBI single before the game was tied on an HNU error.
Poor fielding by Holy Names gave HPU the lead in the second inning when Nakasato scored on a failed pickoff attempt.
The HNU defense cost itself again as HPU took a 7-4 lead in the fourth on an error and a passed ball. Holy Names struggled all night with its D committing nine errors in the doubleheader to go with the passed ball.
The Hawks made it a three run game with a tally in the seventh inning. However, HPU got the insurance run back in the eighth on a sac fly from
Codey Ellenwood.
After the rough first inning, starter
Nick Camarena (2-1) threw four shutout innings to get the win.
John Albert got the save after pitching the final four innings while yielding just one run.
Tyler Tokunaga had a great night with five combined hits, Nakasato had four.
The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Hans L'Orange Park. Â
