Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI (April 12, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (21-17, 11-11) split Sunday's doubleheader with a solid UH Hilo ballclub (28-16, 9-5). The Sharks fell 9-1 in the opener but responded with an 8-2 win in game two.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one and continued to add to it. HPU trailed 7-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth. HPU put up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board. However, UH Hilo added two more runs in the sixth to get the six-inning mercy rule win.
Kristen Caskey and
Toni Baysa each had two hits in the opener.
UH Hilo again struck first in game two with a run in the first inning.
HPU countered with three runs in the second when the Sharks sandwiched Baysa's RBI hit around RBI triples from
Kiana Wolfe and
Keila Elderts.
The Vulcans added another single tally in the third inning to make it 3-2. The Sharks didn't waste any time and answered with another crooked number in the bottom of the inning. After scoring on an error, HPU made it 5-2 on a triple from
Mari Kajiwara. Wolfe and Baysa then each followed with run scoring singles to put HPU up five.
Although pitcher
Alexa McCoin wouldn't need it, HPU tacked on another run in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Wolfe.
Noelani Boyer and Baysa each had two hits; Wolfe went 3-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI.
McCoin (6-3) was great on the mound; she gave up just two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work.
The Sharks now head back to California for a six-game road trip. HPU starts with a doubleheader on April 16th at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont.
