Box Score 2 HILO, HI (April 17, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (20-19, 13-15) took on the Vulcans of UH Hilo (7-32, 4-23) in a doubleheader on Friday night. HPU took both games (12-3, 4-0) while
Rico Garcia set new records for most strikeouts in a season and in a career.
The Sharks dominated game one with a scoring barrage, continuing the trend from the previous weekend's series. HPU put up 10 runs over the first six innings, scoring in every inning except the third.
In the eighth inning, the Vulcans finally scored, putting up three runs on a bases clearing double.
The Sharks put up another two runs in the top of the ninth before the notching the opening game win.
Nolan Barraza led the way offensively going 4-6 at the dish, driving in three and scoring two runs.
Chad Bolibol,
Codey Ellenwood, and
Ryan Torres-Torioka all had two RBI in the game to go along with multi-hit games each.
Shark ace Garcia (5-4) had a record setting day on the mound, after nine innings of work and 14 strikeouts. Garcia reset the single season strikeout record at 81, breaking his own mark of 74 from a year ago. He also set the record for most strikeouts in a career with 211 passing Brad Buenconsejo (1990-1993).
In game two, it was the Sharks pitching that sealed the game and put HPU over .500 on the season.
The Sharks took the lead in the fourth inning when Bolibol grounded into a fielder's choice to score
Tyler Tokunaga.
In the seventh inning, HPU extended its lead, scoring three runs in the inning. Tokunaga singled home a run, followed by a Barraza single for another tally. Ellenwood wrapped up the Shark rally with an RBI single, putting the score at 4-0.
Starter
Harley Holt (4-4) held down the Vulcans the entire seven innings. He allowed just two hits in the game and struck out nine Vulcan batters.
HPU continues the series with UH Hilo tomorrow with game one of the doubleheader starting at 10:00 am at Wong Stadium.
