Sharks Rip Academy of Art 87-58 for 17th Straight Win

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – No. 24 Hawai'i Pacific University's Janessa Manzano hit a school record seven 3-point field goals as she led the Sharks to an 87-58 victory over Academy of Art on Monday night at Kezar Pavilion.
 
The 24th ranked Sharks (21-2, 15-1) extended their school record winning streak to 17 games. The Urban Knights (6-19, 5-12) lost its fourth straight game.
 
 "We shot the ball really well," said HPU head coach Reid Takatsuka. "We played and took care of business. We were comfortable and it showed."
 
Manzano, the junior guard from St. Ignatius High playing in her home town, became the first Shark to make seven 3-pointers in a game that accounted for all 21 of her team-leading points. She also dished out five assists, while freshman forward Alysha Marcucci of Melbourne, Australia/Marist-Sion, scored 15 points. Senior forward Jessi Reeves of Coffs Harbour, Australia/John Paul and junior guard Samantha Lambrigtsen of Oregon, Ill./Oregon HS, each scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard Spencer Gray of Centerville, Ohio/Centerville, added 11 points with five rebounds and four assists.
 
The Urban Knights were led by Pre'Franz Dominick with 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Helena Orts scored 16 points with six rebounds and Ines Medina added 12 points and six boards.
 
The Sharks shot 52 percent from the floor (32-of-62), including 60 percent (15-of-25) from the 3-point arc. HPU hit 8-of-10 (80 percent) from the foul line. ArtU was held to just 31 percent (18-of-59) from the field, with 5-of-16 (31 percent) from the arc. The Urban Knights connected on 17-of-21 from the charity stripe. HPU outrebounded ArtU 40-32, while ArtU had 17 turnovers to the Sharks 18
 
The Urban Knights jumped out to a five-point lead in the first three minutes of the game before a 3-pointer from Gray keyed an 8-0 run by the Sharks that was capped by a triple by Marcucci for a 10-7 lead and HPU never trailed again. The Sharks led by two at 13-11 at the quarter break.
 
The Sharks posted an 8-0 run midway through the second quarter, then stepped on the gas with a 10-0 run as part of a 13-4 streak finished by a Marcucci 3-pointer to take a 40-24 lead into halftime.
 
Manzano, who went 3-for-4 from the 3-point arc in the second quarter, repeated the feat in the third period by hitting three straight to go with a triple from Marcucci as the Sharks outscored ArtU 33-17 in the quarter and pushed the lead to 32 at 73-41 at the horn.
 
After a pair of Lambrigtsen layups to start the fourth, Manzano hit her school record 3-pointer to put HPU up 80-43 and the Sharks largest lead of 37 points with seven minutes to go. The Sharks cruised the rest of the way for an 87-58 win.
 
The nationally-ranked Sharks continue their mainland road trip by remaining in the Bay area to face Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday evening. Tipoff at Gleason Gym in Belmont, Calif., is slated for 3:30 p.m. HST (5:30 p.m. PST).
